I painted this classic pose as a portrait of Mario, a gypsy from Seville, Spain who has spent his life traveling through Europe playing in cafes and bars. I met him at a popular cafe in Florence, Italy where I was captivated by his joyous personality and humor and entranced by his music. This piece was mostly painted from life in my studio with a few imaginative additions.
